In last week’s blog, we looked at the impact of small chemical spills, but this week we are exploring some of the largest oil spills in history, including the biggest ever monster spill, which was a deliberate one.   Much of the environmental damage caused by oil spills is immediate, but the long-term damage is significant and can last for decades following the initial spill. These spillages generally occur as a result of damage to underwater pipelines, tankers or offshore rigs and sadly, once this oil spreads across the surface of the ocean it coats everything it touches; grains of sand, rocks, wildlife and plants.

A chemical leak at a holiday park in Norfolk last month led to around 40 people attending hospital for treatment. The chlorine leak occurred in the swimming pool and became apparent when guests began to complain that their eyes were stinging excessively. Emergency services were called and the incident was quickly contained. Those who attended hospital suffered temporary difficulty breathing due to their exposure to the high levels of chlorine (a toxic gas with corrosive properties), however; thankfully none of the individuals involved were seriously injured.
